LinkedIn feeds remain a constant stream of layoff news. January is pacing to 100k layoffs, which would nearly doubled the previous high back in November 2022.

According to trueup.io/layoffs there have been 285 layoffs at tech companies in 2023 with 89,841 people impacted (3,209 people per day). Carerev, Komodo Health, PartnerStack, Waymo, Reddit, Avalara and Spotify were some of the notable tech companies making cuts last week.

DEELS ASCENT TO $295M 🦄

Deel (aka the international hiring and payroll company) rise is nothing short of remarkable. They graduated Y Combinator in 2019 and did $4M ARR in 2021. Fast forward to today and they're at a whopping $295M in ARR. They grew $238M in 12 months and are now valued at $12B.

And they're not stopping. Just last week they launched Deel HR to go head-to-head with Rippling 🍿.

Both companies are growing fast.....

Things you should be asking in the interview process:

•  Burn rate - when will they run out of money? aka when do they need to fundraise again or when will they be cash flow positive?

•  Forecasted growth + how many customers do they have?

• Valuation - tie it back to revenue.

• Churn - can they keep their customers?

• Hiring plan - does it match up to where revenue is today? Revenue per employee is a good metric

• CAC / LTV - have they figured out how to acquire customers (aka sales efficiency)?

Quicknode raised a $60 million Series B funding round led by 10T Fund, with participation from Tiger Global, Seven Seven Six, and QED Investors

Orbit Fab raised a $3M seed round to make orbital refueling easier, cheaper and more accessible. Type 1 Ventures and TechStars led the round.
